No, they still do it. My Marine son has competed a few times over the summer. I guess it just isnt shown on TV anymore...

Dave, I thought it was only between RN Devonport, RN Portsmouth and Fleet Air Arm, so RM does it now?

First went to the Royal Tournament in the fifties. It all came to an end in 1999.

I'll ask him for the details, but I think all the RN commands can put a team in. The Royal Tournament ended in 1999, but a tournament is run at HMS Collingwood every year.

It is a huge cost to run. There are around 30 guys for each of the 3 teams Portsmouth, Plymouth and the fleet air arm Training is around 2 months. The costs could no longer be justified

I was in the Royal Tournament in 1985, i remember that the field gun teams used to get fed before everyone else with double rations.
Big fit fuckers with fingers and other bits of body smashed, mangled or missing.

There is talk of doing some public displays of these races as part of the Mayflower 400 Anniversary celebrations here in Plymouth in 2020.
Devonport will win Swt

They just did a slightly millenial version of it on 'Britains Biggest Warship'. They had no wall to scale, which as far as I can recall is the real ballbreaker of the race.

I remember being taken to the Albert Hall to see the Royal Tournament in the 70's, they would have to assemble a canon from the parts after hauling it over an assault course racing another team from one end to the other, very impressive.

67, it seems Earls Court was the venue for the Royal Tournament after it moved from the Royal Agricultural Hall. It initially started at The Albert Hall in 1905. Could swear I saw it at The Albert Hall, maybe it was a special anniversary edition or such like, it was early 70's?
